How to pass the Montana knowledge test

  1. Read the handbook. Every question comes from the official Montana manuals; the handbook page links to the agency's own copies.
  2. Practice test by test. Each numbered test mixes Montana law with the national road rules, like the real exam.
  3. Read every explanation. Especially for answers you got right by guessing.
  4. Simulate the real exam on the category page when you pass the tests comfortably.

Montana written test format

Car 33 27 correct (6 mistakes allowed) 14 years 6 months while enrolled in an approved traffic education course; 15 years once that course is completed; 16 years without traffic education

Car. A written test and a vision test are taken at a driver exam station. The Motor Vehicle Division does not publish the question count or the passing score, so the figures shown are not confirmed by an official source.

Motorcycle. The Montana Motorcycle Manual states the endorsement requires a valid Montana driver license plus the motorcycle written and road tests, and sets the minimum age at 16, or 15 with an approved traffic education course. The question count and passing score are not published by the Motor Vehicle Division.

CDL. The Montana CDL manual confirms the age split between intrastate and interstate licences. The 80 percent passing score is the federal minimum in 49 CFR 383.135 and the 50-question general knowledge count follows the AAMVA model manual; neither figure is published by Montana.
